Have you been diagnosed with diabetes or screened with pre-diabetes by your doctor?

Did you know that Type 2 Diabetes is Australia's fastest growing chronic disease and that heart disease is four times more likely to develop if you have diabetes?

Unless action is taken, people with Type 2 Diabetes are at risk of going blind, having a foot amputated or developing heart disease as a result of their diabetes.

GOOD NEWS: Type 2 Diabetes are preventable IF you address the causes in time!

Diabetes & Clinical Exercise Physiology

Poor lifestyle choices cause a defect in insulin action / production which creates a perfect environment for complications to arise with Type 2 Diabetes.

If you’re guilty of leading a sedentary lifestyle, indulging in artery-clogging fatty foods, and not maintaining adequate blood sugar control you are at risk of developing complications with your diabetes such as heart disease.

Now that your doctor has suggested you make some positive lifestyle changes it is time to act now.

Scientific exercise program

Type 2 Diabetes Exercise Management Programme has been scientifically designed for individuals who have diabetes.

This 8-week group exercise and education program provides you with safe and effective exercises to help you achieve normal blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of diabetes related complications such as limb amputation.

This program is all about producing a lasting change...

In just 1-hour/week you will receive the latest cutting-edge exercise and lifestyle education to enable you to improve your diabetes control.

Diabetes is a serious disease and thus it requires  urgent attention and expert supervision. That’s why each class of the Type 2 Diabetes Exercise Management Programme is conducted under the close supervision of an Accredited Exercise Physiologist who will ensure you get maximum benefit in a safe environment.

An exercise physiologist is not the same as a sports coach, fitness trainer or personal trainer. Exercise Physiologists (EPs) are 4-year University qualified allied health professionals who specialise in the delivery of exercise, lifestyle and behavioural modification programs for the prevention and management of chronic diseases like diabetes.

As part of this 8-week program our qualified and registered EP will provide you and the other participants with a physical activity and behaviour change program to ensure you get real, tangible health benefits.

Case study:

Jonathan was referred to our Diabetes Management Program by his GP under the Group Allied Health Service for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes through Medicare. His referral included 8 group sessions in addition to an initial consultation and follow up consultation.

In the initial consultation Jonathan spoke about having Type 2 Diabetes for over 15 years, borderline high blood pressure (148/82), and that he was now insulin dependent. Jonathan’s HbA1c levels provided by his doctor indicated that his blood glucose control was poor, he indicated that he had never participated in formal exercise, and he regularly experienced the feeling of low blood glucose levels. Jonathan stated that he would experience the feeling of low blood glucose levels at least once per week.

Together with Jonathan goals were set which included increasing his muscle mass and improving his long term glucose control.

Jonathan successfully participated in 8 group exercise and education sessions with a particular focus on education regarding his diet. During this time Jonathan kept a food diary and a blood glucose record sheet.

At the conclusion of the Diabetes Management Program Jonathan made significant improvements in his dietary intake. An eating plan was also devised to ensure he did not experience the feeling of low blood glucose levels. Jonathan’s blood pressure improved, 138/69, and he stabilised his blood glucose readings, improving his HbA1c levels to fair (his best ever result)! Jonathan also increased his muscle mass by over 1kg during this time.

Jonathan has opted to continue in our 8- week Diabetes Management Program and has accompanied this with a home exercise program involving resistance training as well as playing tennis 3 times per week.
